The
electrical machinery sector, which consists of investment and intermediate
goods, has vital importance in Turkey. At present most of the production
is directed to investments for telecommunication infrastructure and
distribution and production in energy sector investments. Basically Turkey
produces almost all kinds of electrical machinery. The major products
covered by the Turkish electrical machinery industry include electric
motors and generators, transformers, electrical cables and wires,
accumulators, batteries, bulbs and electrical domestic appliances.
There
are approximately 300 firms operational in the cable sector, which has the
highest share in the production of electrical machinery industry. In the
last ten years in particular, by means of foreign capital accompanied with
high technology and “know-how” license agreements, the cable sector
has recorded substantial progress in production technology. The
liberalization of economic policies had positive effects on the cable
sector and technology transfers were achieved by many firms. Today,
power cables and all types of telecomunication cables are produced in
Turkey. Most of the fiber optic cables which are produced with high
technology are exported.
The
Turkish electrical household appliances market has a great volume due to
the country's population of about 63 million and continuously rising
living standards. At present there are 11 million households in Turkey
which indicate a huge market. Besides manufacturers in the sector are
competitive both in domestic market and in abroad with their quality
comply with world standards and wide variety of products all of
which have latest technological specifications. Turkish electrical
machinery industry, with its experience and efficient infrastructure, has
been producing its own technology for many products.
In
Turkey, exports of electrical machinery industry have been increasing
gradually. The total value of exports of electrical machinery was
approximately $980.2 million in 2000. The export of electrical cables and
wires showed a considerable increase and has the largest share in the
export of electrical machinery. Electrical cables and wires exports were
$397.8 million in 2000. It is obvious that producer and exporter firms in
cable sector are competitive in international markets with their capacity,
technology, service and quality. In spite of strict competition in
international markets, the value of cable exports will be expected to
increase further.
The
second important exporting subsector in the electrical machinery industry
is electrical domestic appliances and the export value of electrical
domestic appliances reached to $189.4 million in 2000. Electrical ovens
which are part of electrical domestic appliances are the major export
products. In 2000, the value of electrical oven exports was $106.2
million. Electrical oven sector has been developing with its modern
production, technology and high quality. The countries of the
European Union and the Middle East are major customers for the electrical
machinery industry.
In
the electrical machinery industry, the other important items for export
are accumulators, electrical motors and generators, transformers.
In
2000 amongst the European Union countries, Germany ranked as the
most important buyer of Turkish electrical machinery.
It is worth to mention that since most of exports of the sector is
directed to the EU, Turkish electrical machinery products comply with
European standards, technical norms and all carry CE Mark on them.
