The output of the paper industry has not been sufficient to meet demand, but there has been an improvement in export-oriented production. In spite of an increase in demand of 77 %, production increased by only 56 % between 1980-1991, and imports therefore increased 3.5-fold. Although there was a minimal increase, exports increased 30-fold.
As in the previous period, 91 % of domestic demand will be met by production. Paper imports, as an input are going to rise by 8.7 % annually. New factories constructed by the private sector will increase their capacity, and production volume will be more than 700,000 tons annually. Exports will increase by 1.3 %.
Production, exports and in imports in the paper industry were 19,172,547 and 5,749 billion TL in 1993. These figures are estimated as 21,079, 1,092 and 4,669 billion TL for 1995.
